THE WORLD'S LARGEST BONFIRE -- ÅLESUND, NORWAY

June 24 is the celebration of Jonsok (St. John's Day), but it also is a time
for the yearly observance of Midsummer at the the coastal city of Ålesund.
A huge bonfire is constructed from wooden crates stacked about 130 feet high.
Known as Slinningsbålet, this bonfire takes place on a small bit of land where the
burning structure can fall safely into the sea.   To set the fire, a brave climber
ascends the structure to ignite a barrel of oil at the top, then scrambles down to safety.

Watch this video from 2010 to see how it is accomplished.

SPECIAL 70th ANNIVERSARY VIDEO

To commemorate the 70th Anniversary of Columbia Lodge, local video producer and nearby Carter Park Neighborhood resident Jean Herbold created a very special video “The Lefse Makers”, featuring several scenes from a favorite activity at the Lodge.   Many thanks to Jean and Golden Amazon Productions for promoting our Lodge in this way and making the video available for broadcast by the local PBS affiliate TV station.

Here’s Jean’s personal story:
“Ever since I can remember, I’ve been interested in images and stories.  I wanted to capture the special moments in life and make them last forever, whether through a drawing, taking a snapshot on my Dad's 110 film camera, or shooting video on a camcorder."
"Growing up, I loved hearing people talk.  My parents grew up during the Great Depression, and their love of stories heard over the radio washed off on me.  I can't remember a weekend when we weren't listening to the news from Lake Wobegon.  It was a no brainer for me to end up in this industry.  I think my curious nature makes me a natural journalist and storyteller. “
